HOT SPRINGS - The Hot Springs Lady Bison volleyball team picked up a pair of BHC wins last week, over Custer and Newell, improving to 14-5 on the season overall.

On the road Tuesday, the Lady Bison defeated Custer 3-0 by scores of 25-13, 25-8 and 25-9.

“Our match on Tuesday night at Custer was really fun watch,” said Hot Springs head coach Stacie Collins. “The girls played their level of volleyball all night and didn’t lower to the level of the team they were playing. It was the first time this year they accomplished this feat.

“I sometimes give the girls a small goal to reach for each game they play. Tuesday they far exceeded the established goal. It was very neat to see,” she said.

Rikki Powell was 18-of-18 serving for the Lady Bison, while Chelsey Hughes went 15-of-16 and had a team-high six aces. Randi Weiss was 17-of-18 with one ace.

Hughes was also 17-of-19 attacking with a team-high five kills. Carlie Weiss was 12-of-14 attacking with four kills, while Cori Bachand went 12-of-13 with two kills.

Sarah Geiser had a total of three blocks. Hughes led with six digs, with Carlie Weiss adding four.

At home on Thursday versus Newell, the Lady Bison dropped the first game by a score of 20-25 but then won the next three by scores of 25-22, 25-14 and 25-23.

“Against Newell we struggled in the first game of the match, but did seem to pull together in the remaining three games,” said Coach Collins. “It is frustrating to see the team be so different in their playing style from one match to another. Had we stayed consistent with the style of ball we played on Tuesday night, Thursday night’s match would have been completely different.”

Powell again helped to lead the team in serving with a 25-for-25 performance with one ace. Mackenzie Anderson was 19-of-20, while Randi Weiss was 15-of-16 with one ace.

Carlie Weiss was dominating at the net with a game high 11 kills while going 36-of-38 attacking, along with six blocks. Sandra McPherson had six kills, while Hughes, Randi Weiss and Geiser each added five kills.

Randi Weiss had a team-high 20 kill assists on 95 attempts.

Anderson meanwhile had a team-high 18 digs. Hughes and Randi Weiss each added nine digs apiece.

Tonight (Tuesday), the Lady Bison volleyball team hosts Hill City followed by another home match against Lead-Deadwood on Thursday. The team will compete in a tournament at Douglas High School on Saturday.
